Tamil Nadu's great temples were built a day's journey apart, which makes the state a road trip that designed itself a thousand years ago. This trail runs south from Chennai along the Coromandel coast to Pondicherry, then inland through the Kaveri delta — Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, the Brihadisvara at Thanjavur — and ends beneath the painted gopurams of Madurai's Meenakshi temple.
Between the UNESCO-listed monuments, the trip is stitched together with smaller pleasures: banana-leaf lunches in delta towns, bronze-casters' workshops at Swamimalai, French-quarter mornings in Pondicherry, and the best filter coffee of your life, found twice a day.
Day 1
Down the East Coast Road to the Pallava port city. Shore temple at golden hour, seafood dinner on the beach.
Day 2
Arrive by lunch. The afternoon is for the French quarter, the promenade, and a bakery crawl.
Day 3
Inland through Chidambaram for the Nataraja temple, then into the temple-dense lanes of the Kaveri delta.
Day 4
Darasuram and Swamimalai in the morning, then the afternoon under the Brihadisvara's sixty-metre vimana.
Day 5
South through Trichy for the Rockfort climb and Srirangam's island temple, arriving in Madurai by evening.
Day 6
Meenakshi temple with a local historian, the banana market's morning rush, and the night ceremony to close the trip.
