The Leh–Manali Highway is not a drive you tick off; it is one you acclimatise to. In 479 kilometres the road leaves the orchards of Kullu, tunnels under the Rohtang ridge, and climbs onto the Tibetan plateau, crossing Baralacha La, Lachulung La, and finally Tanglang La at 5,328 metres.

Our version is deliberately unhurried. Seven days instead of the usual two means real acclimatisation nights at Jispa and Sarchu, time to stop at every prayer-flag-strung pass, and a support vehicle with oxygen the whole way. You drive; we handle permits, fuel planning, and the weather calls.

Who this trip suits

The route, day by day

  1. Day 1

    Arrive Manali · 2,050 m

Meet the crew, walk the old town's deodar lanes, and go over the route briefing. Early night — altitude discipline starts now.

  2. Day 2

Manali to Jispa · 100 km

Through the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul's stark valleys. Short day on purpose; Jispa sits at 3,200 m and the body needs the night.

  3. Day 3

    Acclimatisation at Jispa

A gentle walk up the Bhaga valley and an afternoon of nothing. This spare day is the difference between enjoying Ladakh and enduring it.

  4. Day 4

Jispa to Sarchu · 90 km

Over Baralacha La (4,890 m), past the glacial lake at Suraj Tal, to the tented camp on the Sarchu plains.

  5. Day 5

Sarchu to Tso Kar · 120 km

The Gata Loops, Lachulung La, and the whaleback More Plains. Overnight beside the salt lake at Tso Kar, watching for kiang.

  6. Day 6

Tso Kar to Leh · 160 km

Tanglang La before the wind rises, then the long descent through Upshi and the Indus valley into Leh.

  7. Day 7

    Leh · 3,500 m

Shanti Stupa at sunrise, old-town bakeries, and the trip debrief over apricot cake. Fly out or continue into Ladakh.

Questions about this route

Do I need mountain driving experience?
You need calm, unhurried driving more than heroics. The road is sealed for most of its length; what matters is patience on hairpins and respecting the crew's weather calls. The lead vehicle sets a sensible pace.
What about altitude sickness?
The whole itinerary is built around acclimatisation — gradual sleeping altitudes and a rest day at Jispa. The crew carries oxygen, monitors everyone daily, and descending is always the plan B. A medical form is required at booking.
When does the road open?
Typically June to September, depending on snow. We confirm departures only once the passes are officially open, and we build a buffer day into the schedule for weather holds.
