The Konkan coast is the drive most Indian road-trippers promise themselves and keep postponing. NH 66 threads between the Sahyadri hills and the Arabian Sea for the length of Maharashtra, dipping to fishing harbours and climbing over laterite plateaus the colour of rust. We slow it right down: five days for what a highway sign says is a ten-hour run.

You stay in family-run homestays a short walk from the water, eat fish thalis where the boats land, and take the ferry crossings that the fast route bypasses. By the time you cross the Goa border at Terekhol, you will have seen the coast the way it deserves — one creek at a time.

Who this trip suits

The route, day by day

  1. Day 1

Mumbai to Kashid · 130 km

Out of the city early, across the new trans-harbour link, and onto the coastal road via Alibaug. First swim at Kashid's casuarina-backed beach; overnight in a garden homestay.

  2. Day 2

Kashid to Ganpatipule · 230 km

The longest driving day, broken by the Agardanda ferry and lunch at Harihareshwar. Arrive for golden hour at Ganpatipule's shoreline temple.

  3. Day 3

Ganpatipule to Malvan · 150 km

Laterite plateaus, mango orchards, and the descent into the Malvan coast. Evening walk to the fish market to choose dinner.

  4. Day 4

    Malvan and Tarkarli

A no-driving day. Boat out to Sindhudurg fort, snorkel off Tsunami Island if the sea is calm, and laze at Tarkarli beach.

  5. Day 5

Malvan to North Goa · 80 km

A short hop over the Terekhol river into Goa, with a stop at the clifftop Redi Ganesh temple. The trip ends at your Goa stay by lunch.

Questions about this route

Is the Konkan drive suitable for a small hatchback?
Completely. NH 66 and the coastal loops are sealed throughout; the only care needed is on narrow village lanes, where a small car is actually the easiest thing to drive.
Can we swim at the beaches on the route?
Yes at Kashid, Tarkarli, and Bhogwe in fair weather — the plan marks which beaches have lifeguards and which are look-only. The sea is calmest from November to February.
What's the best month for this trip?
November to February is the sweet spot: dry roads, calm seas, and the best fish. Avoid the monsoon months — half the charm of this route is being outdoors.
